Software
Updates
Since your ThinServer5 system is connected to the internet, it
is especially important to keep up with the latest bug and security
software updates. Fortunately, your system will be remotely updated
and monitored by your Partner company 72 times per day, 24/7.
MX
Backup Service
E-mail has become a
mission critical service on the Internet. We have come to rely
on guaranteed e-mail delivery. The MX Backup Service gives you
peace of mind by queuing your mail when your primary mail server
is unavailable.
When you enable the MX backup record, a partner.net mail server
is added with priority 100. If mail sent to your primary mail
server cannot be completed, our backup mail server will spool
mail until the primary mail server is back online. Automatic attempts
to redeliver mail occurs every 15 minutes or so.
Bandwidth
Monitor
The Bandwidth Monitor provides information
on the average upload and download speed of your system's Internet
connection. The hourly test is a great tool for measuring your
Internet provider's quality of service and detecting unauthorized
usage. Keep in mind, the results depend on many factors:
• The connection to your ISP/ASP
• The network traffic on our
monitoring servers
• Routers between
our monitoring servers and your server
System
Monitor
The System Monitor checks
the status of your server on a regular interval -- anywhere from
every 5 minutes to every 3 hours. If a system problem occurs,
an e-mail alert is sent to your partner. Two types system checks
are performed:
• The port monitor
checks the connection to services (e.g. web server)
• The resource
monitor checks system load, disk space, and memory usage
System
Load Average
The system load monitor tracks the
load average over a 5-minute time span. Among other potential
issues, this system check catches runaway processes, looping web
scripts, and denial of service attacks. A load above 20 is busy,
but manageable -- anything over 50 is trouble.
Disk Space
The disk space monitor checks the size of each partition and total
disk space
Swap
Memory Usage
For speed and efficiency,
the operating system maximizes the use of physical memory (RAM)
-- if your system has it, the operating system will use it! A
better indicator of memory usage is swap memory
Snort
Updates
The Snort software is
an advanced intrusion detection system. It uses a list of over
1500 Snort intrusion detection rules to protect your system. With
the Snort Update service activated, your rules are automatically
kept up-to-date. Our staff takes the time to ensure the quality
of the detection rules on every update.
Snort updates occur on or about the 1st and 15th of every month.
Updates also occur when a fast-spreading virus or worm is detected
on the Internet.
Security
Updates
Software bug, an error
in a dynamic web page, an un-patched server, or weak passwords
can lead to a compromised server. Unfortunately, unwanted intrusions
can go undetected. When activated, the Security Audit performs
a daily integrity check and notifies your partner of any irregularities
How
It Works
The goal of Security Audit is to pick
up clues that typically result from a server being compromised.
This can be determined by:
• Detecting
changes in critical files and directories
• Checking for a change in the
number of hidden files and directories
• Monitoring the inventory of
setuid/setguids files
• Detecting a change in the
number of superuser accounts
• Auditing the
number of accounts without passwords
On a daily basis, the
security audit will
1. Connect to your
system
2. Make sure the audit tools have
not been tampered with
3. Signal the system to run the audit
4. Wait for the audit to complete
5. Save a simple hash of the results
in our database
The system will send
an e-mail alert to your partner if any irregularities occur during
this process
